As a parent or guardian of a student participating in the eCYBERMISSION competition, you play a crucial
role. Whether you are providing general support or acting as your student's Team Advisor, your
involvement is valuable. Here are some answers to common questions we receive from parents
and guardians.
How can I support my student during eCYBERMISSON?
- Help your student with the registration process on the eCYBERMISSION website as parent/guardian consent is required to complete a student’s registration.
- Assist the team as they brainstorm ideas, conduct research, test ideas, and compose their findings.
- Provide encouragement and support.
- Assist the team's Team Advisor to ensure the team is safe when working on their project and the team is following the eCYBERMISSION rules.
- Encourage your student's team to have fun!
What happens if my student wins a prize?
-
The top scoring Mission Folder (with a minimum composite score of at least 300 during the Virtual
Judging) from each grade level in each state will receive a U.S. EE Savings Bond purchased at half
of the maturity value. Additional bonds are awarded for winners at the regional and national level.

Before awarding the U.S. EE Savings Bonds, all potential winning teams must complete Team Validation
to verify student eligibility to receive an award. Team Validation requires Team Advisors and/or
parents/guardians of potential winners to provide an eCYBERMISSION representative with the student’s
Social Security number (SSN), (which is kept confidential). Upon completion of the Team Validation
process and announcement of the winning teams, parents/guardians must open a TreasuryDirect account
for themselves and must also open a minor-linked TreasuryDirect account for their student before
the U.S. EE Savings Bonds can be awarded. Step-by-step instructions on how to open a TreasuryDirect
account will be provided to parents/guardians in mid-July.
-
Social Security numbers are required to purchase the U.S. EE Savings Bond for the student. Parents/guardians
and/or Team Advisors who do not provide correct and complete information by the deadline are assumed
to have chosen not to comply with the
eCYBERMISSION competition rules
and are forfeiting their claim
to an award for their student. Find out more about eCYBERMISSION awards and
eligibility here.
Who are Mission Mentors and how can they help my student?
-
Mission Mentors are STEM professionals who volunteer with eCYBERMISSION to guide and support teams as
they complete their projects. Mission Mentor Live Chats offer students the unique opportunity to engage
with STEM professionals and eCYBERMISSION staff in real-time online conversations. During these sessions,
students can log in to ask questions about eCYBERMISSION and receive guidance on completing their Mission
Folder. This interactive platform allows students to discuss their projects with experts who are eager to
share their knowledge and provide valuable support to teams during the eCYBERMISSION competition. Learn
more about Mission Mentors and how they support teams
here.
